Addison’s disease treatment info

January 24th, 2012 | lu

Patients in acute adrenal crisis most often have prominent nausea, vomiting, and vascular collapse. In the case of secondary adrenal insufficiency, it is very rare for a patient to respond to addison’s disease treatment if the cause is pituitary damage or disease.
Patients show evidence of dehydration, hypotension, and orthostasis.
Female patients may show an absence of axillary and pubic hair and decreased body hair. This is due to loss of the adrenal androgens, a major source of androgens in women.
If the owner knows about an upcoming stressful situation (shows, traveling etc.), patients generally need an increased dose of prednisone to help deal with the added stress. Avoidance of stress is important for dogs with hypoadrenocorticism.
