Each session of therapy is focused on specific problems and may have a specific agenda to guide discussion. Although there are different ways to do Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, it typically includes some common steps:
1. Identifying troubling situations or conditions;
2. Becoming aware of thoughts, emotions and beliefs about these situations or conditions;
3. Identifying negative or inaccurate thinking;
4. Changing negative or inaccurate thinking;
Working on emotional issues can be painful and often requires hard work. Cognitive therapy aims to help the client to become aware of thought distortions which are causing psychological distress, and of behavioral patterns which are reinforcing it, and to correct them. Success with psychotherapy depends on your willingness to share your thoughts, feelings and experiences, and on being open to new insights and ways of doing things.
