A perception of irregularity of the pulse, an uneasiness in the chest, a flip-flopping in the chest; frequently people describe their palpitations as “my heart stops.” Often, heart palpitations are linked to psychological or dietary issues. Palpitations may be a sign of a more serious health problem if you also feel:
• Dizzy
• Confused
• Light-headed
• Have trouble breathing
• Pass out while experiencing the palpitations
People who have an irregular heartbeat or arrhythmia may have palpitations. (Arrhythmia is a change in the rhythm of your heartbeat.) Take Steps to Reduce Heart Palpitations:
• Leave a stressful situation and try to be calm. Anxiety, stress, fear, or panic can cause palpitations.
• Avoid illegal drugs, such as cocaine and amphetamines.
• Avoid medications that act like stimulants, such as cough and cold medicines or decongestants.
